Let's throw aside the fact that the BCS system is awful, and that college football should have a playoff. Under the current system, did they get the BCS title game right this year? Granted, Florida played their way in with a convincing stomping of Alabama, but did Oklahoma deserve the other spot? Did Texas get hosed? How about undefeated Utah? Penn State and USC only had one loss each, and they weren't even considered. Texas probably had the best case; they were the only team to beat OU, and they only had one loss themselves.
In my opinion, the BCS actually lucked into picking the two best teams. Florida was basically a shoo-in, but I think the decision to put Oklahoma in there was the right one. Toss aside the fact that they lost to Texas; that was a long time ago. OU is the hottest team in the nation right now; they've scored 60+ in each of their last five games and they have possibly the most explosive offense since the Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart administration.
Don't get me wrong, Texas and USC are great teams and it's a shame that they weren't given the chance to compete for the national championship, but that's a whole different argument.
So, did the BCS set up the best game, or is this going to be a repeat of the 2005 national championship? If this wasn't the right call, then what would be?

they did get it right because florida is the best team in college football and oklahoma is a close second, but the system is god-awful and whoever thought up the idea of using computers instead of a playoff system should be put in jail for life without the possibility of parole
ReplyDeletethe commish of the big 12 should endure the same fate, as his conference screwed up big time by making the bcs ranking a tiebreaker, i agree with barack obama, any sensible person knows that a playoff would be best
I don't know about the whole prison thing, but yeah the system is horrible and they just happened to get lucky this year in choosing the best two teams. I also completely agree about the Big 12 commish; who cares about the whole 'north' and 'south' thing. There's no real rivalry there. Let the two best teams in the conference slug it out.
ReplyDeleteI agree also that the BCS is garbage. Because it doesnt necessarily prove who is the best team. How will we ever know if USC isnt better than OU or if Texas is better than Florida. I feel that the regular season rankings is a good way of showing how teams are ranked, but it seems like the ranking becomes somewhat pointless when Selection Day comes. If there was a playoff then we could really see if teams such as Boise State and Utah can compete with the big boys.
ReplyDeleteIf there was some sort of post season that had something along the lines of the first top 8 or 16 teams have a 'first round' bye, and those teams on the lower half and other teams that barely get left out of the rankings have some sort of prelim. playoff. Instead of having those teams play the Poinsettia Bowl or the Motor City bowl
I also agree that the BCS system is seriously flawed and a playoff is required. I am thinking of the football version of March Madness complete with a selection sunday and everything. However, i am noticing several problems. First, a 65 team field for football seems a little outlandish, basketball is different in the fact that games can be played back to back. Football however, has always been a once a week sport.
ReplyDeleteI guess what I am wondering is what kind of format a football playoff could have that would include enough teams to be interesting but also be practical enough to warrant consideration?
I think 14 teams would be a good number. Play it out over a month or so, it could definately work; the only thing stopping it is the amount of money these companies that sponsor the bowl games are making off of them. This year more than ever I found myself watching those random bowl games, and actually being interested in them until I realized that they had absolutely ZERO implications. Some of those bowl games just seem like dead ends. Think about how boring they are now, and then how interesting they would be if the winner had a chance to move onto the National Championship.
